It’s true, the daiquiri is a cocktail that’s been riffed on by any and most bartenders, but It doesn’t hold the gold for the most riffs. That title is given to the martini, and all those odd atrocities originating from it. Yes I’m talking to you Bubble Bath Martini.
Though I’m not here to abhor some ridiculous cocktails, but to admire some of the bests. So for this week’s “Cocktails On Hand” the cocktail written is (1) found in bars all around the world, and (2) might be one of the most famous daiquiris ever. That’s none other than the Hemingway Daiquiri. Which if you have enough of them you might repeat Hemingway’s history and steal the bar’s urinal.
The cocktail’s creator Constantino Ribalaigua Vert known as the “cocktail king of Cuba” created the drink for Hemingway. As myth has it, Hemingway stumbled into the bar and asked for drink with extra rum and little to no sugar. This birthed the cocktail’s first nickname “Daiquiri like Papa,” with papa originating from the friendly nickname Cubans had for Hemingway. Years later Ribalaigua Vert added the grapefruit juice and maraschino liqueur and renamed it as the Hemingway Cocktail.
If you want it in true Hemingway fashion add no sugar, but from my experience I’d advise not to.
Hemingway Daiquiri:
3½ fl. oz Bacardi white rum (Or Ballast Point Three Sheets if you’re feeling crafty)
1 fl. Oz Fresh pink grapefruit juice
1 fl. Oz Fresh lime juice
¾ fl. Oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
½ fl. Oz simple syrup
Mix all contents with ice and shake for 10-15 seconds. Strain and pour contents into a martini glass or whatever you have.
Instead of using Luxardo Liqueur, I used normal cherry liqueur. That’s why the pinkish color for the drink instead of the usual lime green. I highly recommend buying Luxardo, it’s just a few dollars more but it tastes much better.
Thanks SpruceEats for the original recipe.
The daiquiri sounds delicious! Perfect for the hot weather we’ve been getting here. 💖

You’re right, in SoCal it’s been oddly cloudy, but I know in two weeks it’s going to be in the triple digits.😵 Perfect time for a daiquiri.

That might be a bigger bottle than the one at BevMo. I saw a 750ml $40 luxardo bottle at a liquor store and ended up buying a normal $20 cherry brandy liqueur instead(that’s why the drink is pink). The next day I went to BevMo and found the $20 luxardo bottle, so I bought it too. Maybe I’ll do a comparison post 🤷♂️
